Masami Eiri, the
self-declared god of the Wired, proclaimed that Lain was his own creation and
nothing more than an elaborate digital program encased in a human body, and
her only purpose was to bring the Wired and Real worlds together. This
would be accomplished by using the Schumann Resonance field surrounding the
Earth to "push" the "collective unconscious" of the masses
into the conscious. However, it would seem that Masami Eiri was being
used by an even greater force, possibly by the Tachibana Corporation, the
Knights, or even the "collective unconscious" of Earth. It is
even speculated that he might have been the unwitting pawn of God in an effort
to transcend the human race. Ultimately Lain decides that the only way
to put things right was to "delete" herself from the memory of every
person she has ever influenced, from her best friend Arisu
and her father to the MiBs.
